Custom Step allows you set up your own custom fill stitch pattern. A Custom step is unlike Pattern Step in that it does not use a Motif, or Pattern to generate the custom fill. It instead allows you to define how many stitches are in a group and how many splits to apply to that group

Embroidery Settings For Step Stitches
Step Length:
![](lib/NewItem2341.gif)
The length of the stitches that make up the fill area, this setting is normally no less than 30 and no larger than 45.
Step to Satin Limit:
In very small areas, it is not practical to break the stitches into step. This setting defines the width of the column at which the stitches will be sewn in satin instead of step as shown by the hi-lighted area in the image at the right.
Min Border Satin:
The Step length defines the length of the stitches in the fill, however, the area will not always be able to be divided into equal steps. The Step fill also staggers the step lengths so that the stitches do not produce a parallel row effect. The Minimum Border Satin setting sets the shortest stitch allowed in this outer edge stitching
Stitch Type:
Allows selection of Custom Step stitch types from those you have previously created and saved.
Customize:
The Customize button opens a form where you can create your own fill types.

Pattern Name:.
Allows naming and saving of your Custom fill pattern for easy retrieval
Angle:
Defines an angle for the splits in relation to the stitch angle defined in the creation.
Number of Grids:
The Grids refers to the number or rows of stitching that will be defined in your Custom fill. In the example at the right we are re-creating Step Satin. Step Satin stitches use 3 rows of stitching split evenly into 3 parts.
Number of Splits:
The number of parts refers to the placement of the needle penetration points within the fill area.
Stitch Position:
Stitch Position allows you to position the actual needle penetrations for each row within the grid you defined above.
Preview Area
The Preview area displays a graphical representation of the Custom step pattern you have created. The black squares represent the needle penetrations.
Try practicing by attempting to re-create the stitch types like Step 1:1, 1:2 etc.. utilizing the number of rows of stitching and needle penetrations we have defined in the stitch type explanations. Once you become acquainted with the controls, you can create truly unique patterns.
